Move With Purpose: How Testing and Training Build Movement Efficiency

Movement efficiency is not about making every female athlete move the same way. It is about helping each athlete develop the strength, control, power, and options she needs for her sport.

Athletes accelerate, decelerate, jump, land, cut, rotate, and react in constantly changing situations. Training should prepare them for those demands—not simply make one exercise look perfect in a controlled setting.

What Is Movement Efficiency?

Movement efficiency describes an athlete’s ability to complete a task while managing the forces, speed, positions, and energy demands involved.

The most efficient strategy can change depending on the athlete, sport, environment, and task. A volleyball landing, soccer cut, distance-running stride, and softball swing do not require the same solution.

Instead of asking whether movement looks universally “good” or “bad,” better questions include:

  • Can the athlete produce the force the task requires?
  • Can she absorb force and decelerate?
  • Can she maintain control at sport speed?
  • Can she repeat the task under fatigue?
  • Does she have pain or fear?
  • What happens when the task becomes reactive or unpredictable?

Why Test an Athlete?

Observation matters, but it cannot tell us everything. Objective performance testing provides information that can help athletes and coaches make more specific training decisions.

Testing is not a pass-or-fail event. It is a snapshot of current abilities.

Depending on the athlete and program, testing may examine:

  • Lower-body strength
  • Hamstring strength
  • Hip abduction and adduction strength and ratios
  • Side-to-side differences
  • Jump height and force production
  • Reactive Strength Index
  • Landing and force-absorption strategies
  • Deceleration
  • Single-leg performance
  • Change-of-direction ability

No single test predicts with certainty whether an athlete will be injured. The value comes from combining results with the athlete’s history, sport, goals, symptoms, training experience, and current schedule.

From Information to Training

Data only matters when it changes what we do next.

If testing identifies an opportunity to improve hamstring force, jumping strategy, deceleration, or reactive strength, the training plan should address that quality progressively. The program should also continue developing the complete athlete rather than reducing her to one score or asymmetry.

Training may include:

  • Progressive resistance exercises
  • Jumping and landing progressions
  • Acceleration and deceleration drills
  • Planned and reactive changes of direction
  • Single-leg strength and power
  • Repeated efforts under appropriate fatigue
  • Sport-relevant movement challenges

Why Retesting Matters

A baseline identifies where the athlete is today. Retesting shows how she is adapting.

Progress may appear as greater force, improved symmetry, better rate of force development, more efficient landing, increased confidence, or greater tolerance for repeated efforts. Results can then guide the next phase of training.

Retesting also teaches an important lesson: data is information, not identity. A number does not define whether someone is a good athlete. It helps the athlete understand what she has developed and where another opportunity may exist.

Building Confidence Through Competence

Athletes feel more confident when they have practiced the demands they will face. Confidence is not only positive thinking. It can grow from preparation, repetition, feedback, and evidence of progress.

Movement-efficiency training helps athletes understand their bodies and build trust in what they can do. The goal is not perfection. The goal is preparation.
