Protein powders, creatine, pre-workout products, vitamins, electrolyte mixes, and recovery supplements are everywhere in sports.
They are promoted by professional athletes, influencers, teammates, and sometimes coaches. Many products are easy to purchase online or in a store, which can make them feel automatically safe.
But “available” does not always mean necessary, effective, or appropriate—especially for adolescent athletes.
Start With the Basics
Before adding a supplement, ask whether the athlete consistently has:
- Enough total food to support growth and training
- Regular meals and snacks
- Carbohydrate before and after demanding sessions
- Protein distributed across the day
- Adequate hydration
- Enough sleep and recovery
- A training program appropriate for her age and experience
A supplement cannot compensate for chronic under-fueling, limited sleep, or an inappropriate training load.
Food First Does Not Mean Supplements Are Always Wrong
A food-first approach means building the athlete’s foundation with accessible, nutrient-dense foods whenever possible. Some athletes may still benefit from a supplement because of a diagnosed deficiency, restricted diet, medical condition, travel schedule, limited food access, or another individual need.
That decision should have a clear purpose. “Everyone on my team takes it” is not a clear purpose.
Ask Five Questions Before Using Any Product
- What problem are we trying to solve? Be specific about the goal.
- Is there evidence that this product helps athletes like me? Adult research may not apply to adolescents.
- Could food, sleep, hydration, or training address the same issue?
- Has a qualified professional reviewed my health history and medications?
- Has the product been independently tested? Labels do not always guarantee that the contents match the claims.
Protein Powder
Protein powder can be a convenient food product for some athletes, but it is not required to build strength. Milk, yogurt, eggs, meat, fish, tofu, beans, and other foods also provide protein.
If a powder is used, consider the athlete’s age, allergies, total diet, product quality, and reason for using it. More protein is not automatically better.
Creatine
Creatine is one of the most studied sports supplements in adults and may support strength and repeated high-intensity performance in appropriate settings. Research and professional guidance for adolescent use require more caution.
A high-school athlete should not begin creatine simply because an influencer recommends a dose. The decision should involve a parent or guardian and a qualified sports-medicine or sports-nutrition professional who understands the athlete’s age, health, training, and goals.
Pre-Workout and Energy Products
Pre-workout products may contain high amounts of caffeine, multiple stimulants, or proprietary blends. Combining them with coffee or energy drinks can further increase stimulant intake.
Possible effects can include sleep disruption, anxiety, headaches, stomach upset, racing heart, or feeling dependent on a product to train. For adolescent athletes, these products deserve particular caution.
BCAAs and Recovery Products
Branched-chain amino acids are often marketed for soreness and recovery. Some research suggests small effects on soreness in specific settings, but they do not consistently improve performance recovery and are not a substitute for adequate total food and protein.
Most athletes should address the recovery foundations before spending money on an isolated amino-acid product.
Vitamins, Iron, and Vitamin D
More is not always safer. Iron and vitamin D can be appropriate when a deficiency or specific need has been identified, but supplements should not be started solely because an athlete feels tired.
Persistent fatigue deserves evaluation because sleep, low energy availability, illness, stress, iron status, and other medical issues can produce similar symptoms.
Product Quality and Sport Eligibility
Supplements are not regulated in the same way as medications before reaching the market. Products may contain undeclared, contaminated, or prohibited ingredients.
Third-party testing programs can reduce—but not eliminate—risk. Competitive athletes should also understand that they are responsible for substances found in their bodies under their governing organization’s rules.
Who Can Help?
Depending on the question, athletes and parents may consult a physician or pediatrician, sports dietitian, pharmacist, athletic trainer, or another qualified sports-medicine professional.
A responsible professional should be able to explain:
- Why the product is being considered
- What evidence supports it
- Potential risks or interactions
- How long it will be used
- How success will be evaluated
Supplements Are the Smallest Part of the Plan
The most powerful performance habits are often the least exciting: eat enough, train consistently, sleep, hydrate, recover, and ask for help when something changes.
Supplements may have a role, but they should never become the foundation of a young athlete’s confidence or performance plan.
